Getting Started with Ledger Live
Step 1: Download and Install Ledger Live
Begin by downloading Ledger Live from the official Ledger website. Choose the correct version for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android). On macOS, drag the app into your Applications folder and open it using Launchpad or Spotlight.
Step 2: Set Up Your Ledger Device
Power on your Ledger hardware wallet and follow the prompts:
- Choose a secure PIN code.
- Write down the 24-word recovery phrase on paper and store it in a safe place. This phrase is the only backup of your wallet.
- Do not take a photo or store it digitally.
- To ensure accuracy, some users perform a full reset and restoration to verify the recovery phrase.
Step 3: Connect to Ledger Live
Open Ledger Live and select “Set up a new device” or “Restore from recovery phrase” if applicable. Follow the on-screen instructions to check the authenticity of your device and install any firmware updates.
Step 4: Install Cryptocurrency Apps
In Ledger Live, navigate to the Manager section. Install the cryptocurrency apps you need (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). These apps are stored on your Ledger device and are required for managing specific coins.
Step 5: Add Accounts and Manage Crypto
Add accounts in Ledger Live corresponding to each installed coin app. Each account generates a receiving address. Always verify this address on your Ledger device before sending funds to it.
You can now receive, send, or manage cryptocurrencies within Ledger Live.
Step 6: Use Extra Features
Ledger Live also supports:
- Staking supported coins to earn rewards
- Swapping between supported crypto assets
- Using your Ledger as a hardware-based second-factor authenticator (U2F)
Step 7: Stay Secure
Security is critical:
- Never enter your recovery phrase into a computer, phone, or website.
- Ignore any pop-ups or messages claiming your wallet has an error that requires your seed phrase.
- Only download software and firmware updates from official sources.
- Keep your device firmware and Ledger Live up to date.
